About Don McQuinn as writer and coach I’ve written nine novels, ranging from an examination of the Vietnam War and espionage to thrillers and speculative fiction. My work has won awards, made best-seller lists, and been selected for book clubs -- things I hope to see you accomplish. I’ve taught the techniques of fiction at the university level and at numerous other venues, such the Pacific Northwest Writers Association Conference, the Surrey Writers Conference in British Columbia, and the Maui Writers Conference and Retreat.
My primary interest is the novel, although I’ve worked in creative non-fiction, as well. My heritage is Irish, my upbringing is primarily East Texas, my college major was Creative Writing, and I’m a former Marine. I’ve spent my life in the company of great storytellers. Nothing pleases me more than to see someone with a good story tell it well. At this stage of my life, I’m blessed that I can devote the time to help others reach similar goals.
| What’s in it for you? It’s your book and you know what you want to say, but everyone needs an editor. Good editors tell you when something’s not working and then turn you loose to fix it. That’s the sort of service I provide.
More than reading and picking at your material or your mechanics, my job is to study your use of the techniques of fiction and discuss with you why one passage soars and another sinks. We’ll work together to develop your professional understanding of how to apply the techniques of fiction to best effect.
